Apple iPhone 15 series proximity sensor inside the “Dynamic Island”.

Tech giant Apple is reportedly planning to integrate a proximity sensor into the “Dynamic Island” area in the upcoming iPhone 15 series. The Dynamic Island area is the pill and hole cutouts at the top of the screen.

According to the report, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the proximity sensor on the iPhone 15 series will be integrated inside the Dynamic Island area, instead of sitting below it like the iPhone 14 Pro models.

The proximity sensor detects when the user holds the phone to their ear and turns off the screen. This new proximity sensor placement is expected to bring added convenience to iPhone users.

Meanwhile, Apple is said not to bring the under-screen Face ID feature to the iPhone until 2025 or later. According to display analyst Ross Young, the iPhone 15 Pro will not have Face ID below the display due to technical issues. This feature will likely come to the iPhone 17 Pro at the earliest.

Recently, another report hinted that the iPhone 15 series will feature a dynamic island, not just the Pro models. Leaked prototypes of the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, Pro, and Pro Max appear to feature an identical notch, which is likely to be enlarged thanks to software optimizations on iOS since last year.

While the report shares this positive update, it also mentions that the vanilla iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will likely not feature a ProMotion display, instead featuring a standard 60Hz refresh rate display. These two models miss out on the Always-On Display feature, and Apple will continue to use this older A-series chips in non-Pro models well into 2023.

The biggest difference will be in the construction materials, as Apple is believed to use a titanium body instead of stainless steel in the Pro models. Making this change will certainly help the company cut down on the size and weight of the Pro models, which is definitely needed.
