OnePlus now promises four operating system updates for its smartphones: what it means

OnePlus is now looking to extend the shelf life of its devices, starting with the OnePlus 11 5G, which will launch in India this week. OnePlus has been lagging behind in terms of software support for years, forcing people to upgrade or switch to other brands.

But the company is now assuring people that with the OnePlus 11 5G, that’s not necessary. OnePlus founder Pete Lau has confirmed that the OnePlus 11 5G will be the company’s first flagship device to receive 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates.

The OnePlus 11 5G has launched with Android 13-based OxygenOS and if it gets 4 years of OS updates, OnePlus 11 5G buyers will get support for the device until Android 17 in 2026 and another update to protect the device until 2027. OnePlus joins the likes of Samsung with this expanded software support.

However, Samsung has managed to extend longer operating system support to other tier devices, not just premium devices. So it would be ideal if OnePlus had a similar game with the software of the Nord and R-series mid-range devices, since they all run on the same OS. For now, Lau’s statement mentions the flagship, but we hope to get some clarity from the company on this point later this week.

With this announcement, OnePlus and Samsung have closed the gap with Apple thanks to their own OS support period. Google is still lagging behind in this race for pixels, promising three years of OS updates and another year of security.

But over the past few years, we’ve seen Google make an exception and offer out-of-cycle updates to its older Pixel devices if there’s a serious security risk. The OnePlus 11 5G will launch alongside the OnePlus 11R on February 7 for global markets, with other products expected to be announced.
