WhatsApp crashes on Android if you click this link

Millions use WhatsApp, which means hackers target the messaging app in a number of ways. WhatsApp claims to be safe and stable, but a random website URL can sometimes be good enough to crash any app.

A new report has come out that states that a bug is triggered in WhatsApp as soon as you click on a link, causing the messaging app to crash on Android phones. Someone’s Strange Eyes noticed this week that when someone clicks on a link (wa.me/settings) sent via a WhatsApp contact or group, the app crashes on an Android phone.

The bug affects people who receive the link in both individual chats and group chats. In fact, the problem extends to the WhatsApp Business version as well.

According to the report, WhatsApp Android version 2.23.10.77 is the culprit, but the crash is likely to affect other versions of the messaging app as well. People have noticed that WhatsApp on their Android phones will crash when a questionable link is clicked, then the app will restart to give you the main feed as long as you don’t reopen the chat with that link.

WhatsApp is yet to confirm the issue and reason why this link caused the app to crash. However, if any of you have chatted using the link above, there is another way to block this message from your account.

All you need to do is log in to your WhatsApp account using the web version, open the chat with the link and delete it. Since the issue is spreading like wildfire, we’re waiting for WhatsApp to release a fix, and until then we’ll be using the WhatsApp web version, which is surprisingly unaffected by the link.
