5 AI developments you might have overlooked today: China to expand AI initiatives, AI algorithm could aid in diagnosis, and more
In the latest AI news, researchers have created a cutting-edge AI system that can detect diseases using images and offer detailed visual guides for diagnosis, enabling early treatment identification by medical professionals. Additionally, China is ramping up its AI strategy to align with its strategic and industrial objectives, focusing on enhancing technology self-reliance. Stay updated on the latest developments in the world of AI.
1. AI model could help with diagnosis, researchers say
The IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging described how a new AI model could make it easier for doctors to identify disease and provide the right treatment using a visual map. Doctors will be able to “monitor its reasoning, check for accuracy and explain the results to patients,” the researchers said. Sourya Sengupta, lead author of the study, said, “Our model will help streamline this process and make it easier for both doctors and patients,” according to a PTI report.
2. China strengthens AI efforts for industrial development
China has accelerated industrial development plans, especially quantum computing and artificial intelligence, to achieve technological self-sufficiency. The country is launching the AI-plus initiative and several major science and technology programs to accelerate development. The report highlights, according to a Reuters report, “We will fully utilize the strengths of the new system to mobilize resources nationwide to increase China’s innovation capacity across the board.”
3. No need for curriculum changes despite AI: IIT-Mandi director
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi director Laxmidhar Behera said the use of artificial intelligence has not reached its full potential in educating children. Behera also said that engineering colleges don’t need to completely change their curriculum because of “the advent of AI” because it can’t do research. He said: “I don’t think that artificial intelligence (AI) or the tools associated with it have reached a stage at the moment where it can really educate our students about scientific concepts and scientific possibilities. I don’t think that AI is enough now because we ourselves don’t understand our own cognitive our processes,” according to a PTI report.
4. HCLTech unveils its generative AI tool for engineers
HCLTech introduced its GenAI platform called AI Force, which focuses on improving “time value by transforming the software development and design lifecycle.” This speeds up employee productivity, work efficiency and timely completion of tasks. The tool is developed for Azure OpenAI and can also be integrated with Microsoft GitHub Copilot. Vijay Guntur, head of design and product development services at HCLTech, said in a release, “This platform is a real game changer and some of our pilot projects with clients in the technology and financial services industry have achieved very encouraging results.
5. CCI conducts market research on artificial intelligence
The Competition Commission of India (CCI), the fair trade regulator, conducts in-depth market research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to understand the use cases of AI and its evolution. CII chief Ravneet Kaur said, “We will soon launch a market survey on AI to develop a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape of AI and AI use cases in the Indian market, which could inform the Commission’s strategies to promote innovation and fair competition,” according to a PTI report.
