Ahmedabad Woman Allegedly Stalked By Ex-Partner With Apple AirTag: Report
Ahmedabad Cyber Cell has registered an FIR against a person for allegedly stalking his ex-partner using an Apple AirTag – a small unobtrusive Bluetooth tracking device that allows users to track bags, key chains and anywhere it can fit.
According to Deccan Herald, the deceased used AirTag to trace the whereabouts of the woman (his ex-partner) and now an FIR has been lodged under Section 354 D of the Indian Penal Code and 66E of the IT Act.
We’ve often heard how useful Apple’s AirTag can be and how it can help track valuables, but recently several reports have claimed that Apple AirTag and other Bluetooth-based trackers have been used for nefarious purposes such as stalking.
Additionally, the report claims that the woman had first noticed the AirTag “moving with her” in May when her iPhone 13 Pro Max alerted her. And once again, as he drove to his office from his apartment, the alarm popped up again. This happened again on August 29. At one point, the woman’s driver reportedly saw another alert that said, “The owner of this AirTag can see your location.”
Now this prompted the woman to take action as she found herself being tracked. As a result, the woman reported this to the Cyber Cell authorities and visited her car service center to look for the device. To his surprise, the mentioned Apple AirTag was found glued under the seat cover of the driver’s seat.
Police officials have reportedly identified the deceased, who is said to be the woman’s ex-partner and has been harassing the woman for a very long time. “This is perhaps the first case of a woman being stalked using an AirTag in India,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.
In related news, earlier this year, police in Memphis, US, arrested a man who tracked his ex-wife’s vehicle with an Apple AirTag. His ex-wife found the tracking device and in his defense the stalker (ex-husband) said he was just trying to track their children’s whereabouts.
Apple had issued an official statement about the stalking, with a company spokesperson saying: “AirTag was created to help individuals locate their personal property, not to monitor people or their property. We strongly condemn any malicious application of our products.”
