Apple’s new security issues pose a risk to iPhone and Mac users
Apple iPhone and Mac users have a new security concern this week that could allow attackers to break into their systems and steal data. In recent months, Apple has followed several security incidents for which it has released patches through new updates. But the new development comes from security company Trellix, which has released information about new security issues in iOS and macOS.
The company says these defects range in severity from medium to high. And if these issues are not addressed, any malicious app can easily bypass Apple’s security to obtain information about the user, including their location, messages, call history, and more.
Apple received similar warnings from Google in 2021, when spyware companies such as NSO Group discovered more zero-day bugs and used them to plant the famous Pegasus spyware on iPhones without user consent.
Although Apple claims to have fixed the loopholes that allowed spyware to penetrate its security, Trellix
says
the steps the company is taking may not be enough to prevent future similar attacks. It says that attackers have improvised tools that can now circumvent the strict restrictions imposed by Apple after the major incident.
But it’s not all doom and gloom for Apple users, as the company has no evidence that these vulnerabilities have already been exploited on a large scale. Trellix also says that Apple’s January versions of iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 will fix the zero-day issues.
But the general feeling in the security circle suggests that Apple, which faces multiple zero-day issues at regular intervals, does not bode well for platforms.
The security firm has also deemed these vulnerabilities “pretty clever” and suggests that ordinary users are struggling to figure out what’s wrong with their devices. The best way to protect your iPhone or Mac is to update to the latest versions provided by Apple and hope that the problem can be fixed right away.
