Elon Musk plans to remove ‘left bias’ from Grok AI chatbot due to dissatisfaction, aims for political neutrality

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, has launched an AI startup called xAI, which has created the Grok AI chatbot. Musk announced this on November 4, describing Grok as an AI inspired by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, capable of answering a wide range of questions and even suggesting new ones. Unlike most other AI systems, Grok tackles controversial topics with humor and cleverness, aligning with Musk’s commitment to free speech. However, it is important to note that while Musk’s AI venture developed this conversational chatbot, it does not share the same political beliefs as the X chief, who leans towards the right.

Grok’s political bias

Researcher David Rozado recently shared a diagram of X showing the political compass test applied to Grok, and the findings may have come as a shock to Elon Musk. The chart shows that Grok AI is even more left-leaning than OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT. It also suggests that the AI chatbot has a more liberal view of society. In a political spectrum quiz, Grok was found to have a “left moderate social libertarian” compass.

Could this mean that the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI may have been affected by what Musk calls the “awakened mind virus”?

After revealing the results of the compass test, the X engineers contacted the researcher. Rozado posted: “Minutes after I posted the results of Grok’s political compass test, xAI’s CTO @ibab_ml contacted me with methodological questions and a genuine interest in improving Grok. Within an hour, @elonmusk announced immediate actions to move Grok closer to political neutrality.
