Report: Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns employees to anticipate additional job cuts in 2021
According to an internal memo cited by The Verge on Wednesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed employees to anticipate further job reductions at the Alphabet-owned company this year.
Pichai said in the memo that this year’s layoffs focused on removing layers to simplify performance and simplify driving speed in some areas, according to the report.
The move adds to signs that job cuts will continue this year as companies look to deploy artificial intelligence software and automation to ease workloads.
“These role eliminations are not on the same scale as last year, and do not apply to every team,” Pichai informed all employees in a memo.
“We have ambitious goals and are investing in our big priorities this year.”
A Google representative confirmed to Reuters that the email was sent to all employees, but declined to reveal the contents of the memo.
Last week, Google announced that it was laying off several employees in its Voice Assistant units, the hardware teams responsible for the Pixel, Nest and Fitbit, the ad sales team, and the augmented reality team.
In January 2023, Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs, or 6 percent of its global workforce. In September 2023, the company had 182,381 employees worldwide.
