GM to Introduce Vehicle-to-Home Charging Capability on All Ultium-Powered Electric Vehicles
GM has announced that it plans to enable vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging on all its electric vehicles equipped with Ultium battery technology by 2026. The initial lineup of vehicles that will support this technology includes the 2024 models of Chevrolet Silverado EV RST, GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevy Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Cadillac Escalade IQ, with the latter set to be unveiled on August 9th. However, it remains unclear when the upcoming Ultium-based Chevy Bolt will be compatible with V2H charging.
Several car manufacturers are introducing V2H technology, which allows owners to get electricity to their homes quickly with their electric cars. It’s an option that can be very useful during a power outage or even save money by utilizing the battery of an electric car when grid prices are high. You can still charge your electric car by connecting it to your home power source.
Last year, GM announced a spin-off business called GM Energy, which includes a division focused on home energy management solutions such as V2H. In June, GM Energy unveiled some of its residential buildings that include V2H-enabled systems, so it was only a matter of time before GM began implementing the technology in its vehicles.
Ultium EV owners can manage the transfer of energy between their vehicle and home using the GM Energy Cloud software platform. GM says it will reveal more details about when it will begin implementing the technology in its vehicles at a later date.
