US Cyber Inquiry Investigates Microsoft’s Involvement in Data Breach
Bloomberg News reported Thursday that a U.S. cybersecurity advisory panel is investigating the risks associated with cloud computing, which also includes Microsoft Corp.
The Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) will focus on risks to cloud computing infrastructure, including identity and authentication management, and review all relevant cloud service providers, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
The report comes after Oregon Senator Ron Wyden in July asked the Federal Trade Commission, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Department of Justice to “take action” against Microsoft following the hack.
Microsoft has come under increasing scrutiny after revelations that hackers allegedly working on behalf of Beijing obtained one of its encryption keys and exploited a coding flaw to gain widespread access to the company’s cloud email platform.
This access was used to spy on the communications of US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and senior State Department diplomats.
The US House Oversight Committee announced last week that it would launch an investigation into China’s suspected involvement in recent breaches of the Commerce and State Department’s email systems.
Microsoft and CISA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
