AirTag Helps Woman Track Down Stolen Bike – Here’s the Story
A recent development regarding the Apple AirTag involves a woman from the Netherlands who successfully used her tracker device to locate a bike thief. The situation had a detective-like quality to it and ultimately had a positive outcome. However, it is worth mentioning that the thief was not apprehended. It is worth noting that most reports about the AirTag tend to focus on negative experiences, such as individuals being tracked against their will. Therefore, it is refreshing to hear a positive story for a change. Now, let’s delve into the details of how this incident unfolded.
The bike recovered with AirTag
The incident began in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, where Beatriz Spaltemberg and her husband William Lacerda reported that their bike had been stolen. According to a report by 9to5Mac, Lacerda had revealed that since bike theft was becoming quite common in their area, they had decided to invest in an AirTag to track their bike if the need arose.
One fine day, Spaltemberg went to the gym as per his daily routine on a bike and parked it outside the gym. He mentioned that he took all precautions and even locked the bike. However, he left the keys in the lock, which inevitably led to the bike being stolen.
Spaltemberg immediately took out his phone and checked the bike’s location via the Find My app. The couple then contacted the police to report the incident. Lacerda explained everything about the bike’s location, and two police officers accompanied them to the scene to return it.
“It all happened in about an hour and a half. The police told me that we were very lucky to have the AirTag [on the bike] because bike theft is common here,” Lacerda said.
They arrived and found their bike right there. To prove it was their bike to the police, the couple used the Precision Finding feature.
However, the thief was not found and the police are investigating the matter and collecting street camera footage to identify the person.
