Apple’s M3-Powered Macs Expected to Launch in October
According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the initial wave of Apple’s Macs powered by the M3 chip may be released as early as October. Gurman suggests that there will be another product launch following the annual iPhone event in September, with the spotlight likely on a new lineup of Macs. He points out that it is unlikely for high-end MacBook Pros or desktops to be released in October, so the new chip is expected to benefit the next iMac, 13-inch MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
In early March, Gurman said that Apple was in the “late stages” of developing two new iMac models with its next-generation M3 silicon. The new chipset likely won’t have many more CPU and GPU cores than Apple’s current M2 chipsets, but is expected to significantly improve performance and efficiency thanks to TSMC’s 3nm process. At the time, Gurman predicted that the new iMac could arrive as early as the second half of 2023 and that it would have the same colorful design as the 2021 model. Last week, he wrote that Apple is also working on a new 32-inch iMac, but warned that the model won’t arrive until late 2024 at the earliest.
In the past, Apple has typically announced new iPad models alongside its latest Macs, but it looks like that won’t be the case this time. “I wouldn’t expect any major updates until the M3 iPad Pros with OLED displays arrive next year,” Gurman writes. However, he notes that Apple is working on a new iPad Air with updated internals. The current model features the company’s aging M1 chipset.
