Apple Releases Important Security Update for iPhones
On Thursday, Apple rolled out a noteworthy security update for iPhones and iPads in order to fix recently identified security flaws found in the devices’ system software.
The problem was discovered by researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, who said the software bug was “actively used” to deliver commercial spyware called Pegasus, developed and sold by the Israeli company NSO Group.
Pegasus is an expensive tool typically used to target dissidents, journalists and political opponents, so ordinary users likely have nothing to fear. Still, Citizen Lab recommends that all users update their devices “immediately.”
To install the update, open your iPhone’s Settings, then select “General” and “Software Update”. You should see the iOS 16.6.1 software update there; Tap to start the installation.
If you don’t see the update, return to the General page and tap About to check your iOS version number. If it’s 16.6.1, the update is already installed. If your phone is still running version 16.6 or earlier, repeat the above steps. If you still don’t see the update, try restarting your phone. If the update does not appear, check your Internet connection and wait a moment before trying again.
