China to remove TripAdvisor and 104 other apps from stores under cleanup campaign

China has removed 105 apps, including that of U.S. travel company TripAdvisor Inc, from the country’s app stores, as part of a new campaign to clean up app stores it deemed widespread of related content. pornography, prostitution, gambling and violence.

China’s Cyberspace Administration said in a statement on its website Tuesday that the apps violated one or more of the three cyber laws, without providing details for each app.

Reuters calls to TripAdvisor’s Beijing office for comment went unanswered.

The authority said it launched the campaign on November 5 in response to a strong reaction from the general public to content deemed offensive. He said he would continue to regulate apps and remove law-breaking apps in a timely manner.

China heavily regulates its cyberspace, and penalties for transgressions are not uncommon, whether the app is operated by a domestic or foreign company.
