Google launches its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold for $1,799; Not coming to India – Check details here
In addition to the flurry of software updates at Google I/O 2023, Google also had its fair share of hardware releases — including the long-awaited Pixel Fold. It is the first foldable device launched by Google, and it certainly stands out from other foldables considering that it ushers in a new era for foldables as the software is now more focused from Google.
Despite being late to the party, Google has managed to include some intriguing hardware, including a hybrid hinge design – which is basically a mix of Samsung’s and OPPO’s hinge designs. Google calls it the most durable hinge design. As a result, the Pixel Fold is also much thinner than competitors like the Samsung Z Fold 4 – and that, along with the build, should theoretically make the Pixel Fold more pocketable and convenient compared to others.
That being said, the Pixel Fold unfortunately won’t make its way to India and many other countries, including even Canada. So you have to import the unit if you want to use it in India.
Pixel Fold specifications and features
The Google Pixel Fold features the same Tensor G2 SoC that also powers the Pixel 7 series, improving on the shortcomings of the first-generation Tensor chipset. The Tensor G2 is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and comes in 256GB or 512GB storage options.
For displays, the Pixel Fold gets a 5.8-inch external display, and the device opens to reveal a 7.6-inch panel. Both displays have a 120Hz refresh rate, and the internal display gets UTG (ultra-thin glass) protection like its Samsung counterpart.
Cameras are the highlight of the Pixel devices, so the Pixel Fold is no slouch, getting a triple camera setup consisting of a new 48MP wide-angle camera, a 5X 10.8MP telephoto camera, and a 10.8MP ultra-wide-angle lens with 121. – graduated field of view. It also has two selfie cameras – a 9.5-megapixel shooter on the front display and another 8-megapixel shooter on the inner display.
Google has packed a 4,821mAh battery in a dual-battery architecture style similar to other foldable batteries on the market. The company claims that the 4,821mAh cell should last all day on a single charge, or 72 hours when using extreme power saving mode.
Pixel Fold price and availability
Google has priced the Pixel Fold higher than other foldable models, keeping the $1,799 sticker price for the base model with 256GB of storage. The phone will only be available in the US, UK, Japan and Germany – in two colors – Obsidian and Porcelain. Oddly enough, Google only offers the 512GB storage version in Obsidian color only – for $1,919.
Additionally, for a limited time, Google is also offering the $349 Pixel Watch for free if you pre-order the Pixel Fold.
