Google officially ceased support for the first generation Chromecast
It’s officially the end of the era for the original Google Chromecast, as the first-generation model will no longer receive updates or support, 9to5Google reports. Chromecast debuted in 2013 as a Switch-sized device that promised to deliver a smart TV experience for $35, and it did just that. Google updated the original Chromecast hardware over the years to keep up with live streaming, but now it’s leaving them behind forever.
Google confirmed in a Chromecast Knowledge Center post that “Chromecast support (1st generation) has ended, which means these devices will no longer receive software or security updates, and Google will no longer provide technical support for them. Users may experience performance degradation.” Google’s Chromecast support page was updated back in April, which means the ad has been missing for quite some time.
Through Google’s lens alone, the original 10-year-old Chromecast took a long time to completely undo. The company has only handled first generation bugs and security issues (no extensive updates) since 2019. The latest update came in November 2022 and was the first in three years. Google has also released newer versions since the first generation, such as the $30 Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and the $50 4K model.
If you were a loyal user of the first generation Chromecast, you should just make sure to fully upgrade it and hope for the best.
