Google will close its Neighbourly app; Says not as per hoped
Google kills one of its experimental apps – Neighbourly . The company announced that it would close the application on May 12 because the project did not proceed as expected.
The search giant introduced the app in May 2018 as a test in Mumbai, India to explore your local area with the help of local experts. Later in November, it expanded its base to a few other cities in the country. However, it didn’t get a grip, probably because it simply didn’t have enough users to provide a fascinating experience. It never even came out in beta.
In an email to customers, Google mentioned that the community answered a question related to more than a million locations, but the project did not increase the company’s expectations:
We launched the Neighbourly Beta app, which connects you to your Neighbors and makes sharing local information more humane and useful. As a community, you have come together to celebrate local festivals, share important information during floods, and answer over a million questions.
But the Neighbourly has not grown as we hoped. In these difficult times, we believe we can help more people by focusing on other Google applications that already serve millions of people every day.
Google also provided a Google Maps Local Guide to help people in your area find answers to your area.
The announcement comes at an interesting moment: Facebook just released a community help feature that allows people to ask for or offer help in their neighborhoods during a this coronavirus crisis.
App closes May 12; you can download content from Neighbourly content until October 12. Another for Google Graveyard.
