OpenAI, an artificial intelligence lab, has published a blog post in an attempt to address concerns about its technology potentially interfering with elections. With a significant number of countries heading to the polls this year, OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT and DALL-E has raised worries about the use of AI to manipulate election integrity. Even OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, expressed his concerns during his testimony in Congress, stating that he was apprehensive about generative AI’s potential to undermine elections through the dissemination of personalized disinformation.
The San Francisco-based company said that in the United States, where presidential elections are being held this year, it is working with the National Association of Secretaries of State, an organization focused on promoting effective democratic processes such as elections.
ChatGPT directs users to CanIVote.org when asked specific election-related questions, it added.
The company also said it’s working to make it clearer when images are AI-generated using DALL-E, and plans to put a “cr” icon on images to indicate they’re AI-generated using a protocol created by the Coalition. for the origin and authenticity of the content.
It is also looking for ways to recognize content created by DALL-E even after editing the images.
In a blog post, OpenAI emphasized that its policy prohibits using its technology in ways it has identified as potentially offensive, such as creating chatbots that impersonate real people or prevent voting.
It also prohibits DALL-E from creating images of real people, including political candidates, it said.
The company has challenges controlling what is actually happening on its platform.
When Reuters tried to create images of Donald Trump and Joe Biden last year, the request was blocked and a message appeared saying it “may not comply with our content policy.”
However, Reuters was able to create images of at least ten other US politicians, including former Vice President Mike Pence.
