Legal Battle Ensues for Apple’s AirTag Amid Reports of Stalkers Using Device
Apple released AirTags with a clear focus on helping people find their lost or misplaced items like bags, AirPods, and more. But the company clearly didn’t think about potential stalking of AirTags, which has created an entirely different problem for Apple, which now faces a legal battle over stalkers’ misuse of AirTags.
Apple has reportedly tried to get the lawsuit dismissed in the US, but the pleas have failed, and now Apple is facing a legal battle accusing the company of launching a cheap product that has become a weapon for stalkers, and Apple has not done enough. to protect customers from some of these activities.
The lawsuit against AirTags suggests that Apple has not focused on the security design of the product, which does not provide protection to customers if and when the product (AirTags) is misused. AirTags aren’t the first product on the market to offer tracking features, but the lawsuit is aimed squarely at Apple, which has tried to do its best to secure AirTags when they’re used to some extent for stalking.
The biggest problem with AirTags, hinted at by the lawsuit, is that stalkers can pick up the device for as little as $29 (roughly Rs. 2,500), making it easy to buy and accessible to anyone.
However, Apple has attempted to fix the stalking issue with an iOS update and integrated it into Find My, which appears to block potential stalking attempts using AirTags. However, the general design of the device does not allow it to make heavy adjustments to a product that is essentially intended for purposes that clearly did not enter Apple’s thought process, and frankly cannot be held responsible for the actions of a third party.
