Major job losses at risk as AI could lead to Google laying off 30,000 employees.
Google is busy working on its AI model, but it seems that the company is also planning a life with AI in its own business. The search giant could cut up to 30,000 jobs as it prepares to build use cases for artificial intelligence to take over from humans, according to a new report.
The report comes via The Information, according to which Google plans to restructure its ad sales department, which seems to see the benefits of using artificial intelligence in its operations. In fact, bringing in AI could lead to a huge turnover at Google, the report suggests. AI is expected to play a big part in the platform’s changing digital advertising revenue stream, which will have a big impact on the people hired for these roles.
Google is also currently testing artificial intelligence in its customer support service, which has a direct impact on the human side of the company’s operations. Google has been in the news for handing out pink receipts earlier this year as well. The headlines never make for rosy reading, but Google CEO Sundar Pichai decided to address the need to revamp the business, which unfortunately ends up costing people their jobs.
At Google, around 12,000 people were already laid off in several reports. Google’s CEO said: “That would have been a significant overshoot for the company. I think it would have made it very difficult in a year like this to build the capacity to invest in regions when the world has become so big.
There’s no doubt that companies have to make these decisions, but the need to reduce staff to integrate AI is likely to be looked at more by a company that makes billions across businesses.
