Microsoft Vice Chair Urges India to Export AI-Skilled Talent

Brad Smith, President and Vice Chairman of Microsoft, emphasized the necessity for India to send out proficient individuals in artificial intelligence as part of its talent export.

Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, Smith said the health of democracies is at stake and new ways to sustain economic growth must be found.

“India’s future is not just about bringing in talent, but more talent with an AI background,” Smith said.

He said there is a need to develop responsible artificial intelligence that fundamentally serves principles important to humanity, such as security, privacy and inclusion.

Smith said the role of artificial intelligence is to improve productivity in a smarter way and must be developed through partnerships between educators and entrepreneurs, among others in India and the United States.

“There is no doubt that you can go anywhere in the world and if you find a talented company, you will definitely find a talented person who grew up in India. When you go to the United States, you will find about 6 million of them, including my boss Satya Nadela,” he said.

Smith spoke on stage with visiting Electronics and IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on “The US-India Partnership: Bridging the Skills Gap”.

During the discussion, Chandrasekhar said India is setting up centers of excellence in 30 countries to meet local requirements abroad as per the government’s request.

He said that before the pandemic, some countries did not accept Indian talent, but after Covid, the same countries started demanding talent from India.

The minister said that India has increased its focus on digital skills of Indian talent as technology spans sectors.
