Nadella Reveals Microsoft’s Reason for Partnering with OpenAI for Major AI Initiative
Microsoft has a solid lead in the AI race thanks to its partnership with OpenAI, which has allowed the company to use the latest versions of ChatGPT before others get to test. OpenAI has gone through big changes in a short time, but Sam Altman continues to lead the team along with Greg Brockman and others.
However, we never learned why Satya Nadella’s Microsoft decided to partner with OpenAI and what qualities appealed to Nadella about the AI giant?
The Microsoft chief has been outspoken lately, and in one of the latest podcasts, Nadella finally gave us some insight into the partnership and how Microsoft decided to pursue the unique deal. “I met with people at OpenAI — Sam (Altman) and Greg (Brockman) — [and] they had that they have a different approach to things and we wanted to partner,” Nadella said on the podcast.
He also refers to OpenAI as “one of the most ambitious technology innovation companies,” which Nadella says has put Microsoft in a strong position to compete with other AI giants in the industry.
OpenAI has an interesting equation with Microsoft, and Nadella clearly understands that they need to be given the freedom to work and develop technologies. According to reports, Microsoft has invested about $10 billion in this partnership, most of which is hardware support. Nadella clearly saw something in Altman and Co., and now his company is reaping the benefits.
Speaking about AI, Nadella had recently mentioned that he can’t believe Google isn’t leading the AI race, especially with all the tools and resources at their disposal. In fact, Nadella was quoted as saying on the podcast that Google should have been the default winner. He said Google is the most vertically invested company to capitalize on the AI boom. After all, it has the technology, the manpower, and even the data to train AI models.
