TikTok ban in NYC
According to a report by The Verge. The NYC Cyber Command conducted a review, and the directive was issued on Wednesday. City officials mentioned that “TikTok posed a security threat to the city’s technical networks.” Officials have asked city employees not to use the app or use it on any device.
A New York City Hall spokesperson said: “While social media is great for connecting New Yorkers to each other and to the city, we need to make sure we always use these platforms safely.”
At the national level, Congress has reportedly been trying to ban the app nationwide for the past three years. The app’s owner, ByteDance, was accused of spying and collecting information on US citizens.
In America, Montana became the first state to take the step to ban TikTok statewide in May. The app was banned when Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed the law into law. Soon after, both TikTok users and the company launched a lawsuit against the state, claiming it violated Montanans’ freedom of speech.
In particular, TikTok is one of the poplar apps in the world and it is causing stiff competition for several tech giants such as YouTube. The app has managed to capture people’s imaginations as it has made it exceptionally easy to create short videos ranging from 3 seconds to 10 minutes. However, its owner ByteDance has been the subject of constant espionage accusations.
