Russian Officials Prohibited from Utilizing Apple iPhones
Starting from July 17, Russia has implemented a ban on Apple iPhones and other Apple devices for government officials due to concerns about potential surveillance by the United States. The Federal Security Service (FSS) of the country has instructed thousands of officials to cease using iPhones and iPads, as stated by the Financial Times. Initially, this ban has been enforced at the trade ministry.
Safety authorities support alternative devices
Sources indicate that security officials from various ministries, especially FSS civilian employees such as deputy ministers, have expressed that iPhones are no longer considered secure. They urge the authorities to find alternative devices. FSS and government officials strongly believe that their American counterparts can exploit Apple devices for eavesdropping. While there may be opposition to this move, the ban is expected to remain in place given the FSS’s long-standing concerns about the use of iPhones for professional contacts.
Growing fear and accusations against Apple
This ban follows an earlier directive issued by the Kremlin in March, which urged authorities to stop using Apple products over fears of potential vulnerability to US hacking. In addition, the Russian government has recently accused Apple of cooperating with US intelligence services, which Apple strongly denies. The company claims it has never collaborated with any government to introduce a backdoor into its products.
The restriction of Apple devices in key ministries and institutions highlights the Kremlin and the Federal Security Service’s growing fear of increased spying by US intelligence services targeting Russian state institutions.
In addition, Rostec’s spokesperson confirmed that the ban applies to all Apple devices. However, personal use of these devices is still permitted. This distinction between professional use and personal use emphasizes the focus on securing the functions of official authorities, while individuals can continue to use Apple products for personal purposes.
