Nintendo Direct to Feature Super Mario Bros. Wonder on August 31st
Nintendo has announced that they will be hosting another Nintendo Direct on August 31st at 10AM EST, as they gear up for the upcoming holiday season. The announcement comes after the excitement surrounding the Tears of the Kingdom has subsided, resembling the completion of a Korok dandelion leaf puzzle.
Nintendo promises that the livestream event will include an “in-depth look” at the upcoming 2D side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. For a Wonder adventure with about 15 minutes of gameplay and information. More Mario is never bad, but this is a theme straight that features Wonder exclusively. In other words, don’t expect trailers for other games, surprise reveals, or anything like that. However, you get plenty of juicy stuff from the first 2D Mario in over a decade.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been described as the “next evolution” of the 2D franchise. We’ve only gotten one trailer so far, but it was full of conversation-worthy moments. Mario can turn into an elephant and the Game World changes by eating a psychedelic flower. The aptly named Wonder Flower looks unpredictable, bringing pipes to life, creating new enemies, or completely changing the overall look of the level. I’m sure the power up will do a lot more, which should be revealed on Thursday.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases for Nintendo Switch on October 30th, just in time for that oh-so-important holiday season. Aside from the side scroller, the Switch’s holiday release schedule looks pretty dry compared to other years. There’s Detective Pikachu Returns, a remake of the SNES classic Super Mario RPG, and some Pokémon DLC, and it’s pretty much all about first-party releases. This is the console’s seventh holiday season, which may have something to do with it.
