Dictionary.com adds AI-related terms to its lexicon
Dictionary.com, a website dedicated to word meanings, has recently incorporated terms such as generative AI, GPT, and LLM into its lexicon. In an effort to stay abreast of the constantly evolving language, the team at Dictionary.com has diligently added 566 fresh words and 348 novel definitions for the autumn of 2023. This proactive approach ensures that their dictionary remains relevant and valuable to users.

But that’s not all! Dictionary.com has also given a new meaning to the word “hallucinate” in generative artificial intelligence. In this context, it means that a computer program comes up with false information that is contrary to the user’s wishes and pretends it is true, The Verge reports.

New words and meanings
Other new words they added include “nepo baby” which means a famous person who became famous because of their famous parents. There is also “jaw” which means something or someone when you don’t know or can’t think of a certain word. “Biohacking” means doing experiments on one’s own body, like in a scientific experiment. “Algo” is short for computer algorithm, which is a set of steps that a computer follows to do something. Finally, “information pollution” means that false or irrelevant information gets mixed up with important facts, making it difficult to tell what is true.
Dictionary.com didn’t just add English words; they added some from other languages too! “Hanbok” is a traditional Korean dress. “Jolabokaflod” is an Icelandic tradition where people give books as Christmas gifts. “Kakeibo” is Japanese and means a system to keep track of your household budget.
By adding these words, Dictionary.com tracks language changes. They want to be a useful tool for understanding the words and phrases that are important to us now far into the future.
