Nokia begins manufacturing Fiber Broadband devices using 5G Building Steam
Nokia now plans to start manufacturing fiber broadband devices at its Chennai plant. The company made the announcement this week, which means Nokia’s Sriperumbudur plant will now also manufacture fiber broadband equipment.
The company has confirmed that there is a high demand for these devices in India and other countries, and Nokia wants to use its local hardware to manufacture them for India and export as well.
“As the momentum towards 5G networks and new hybrid deployment models push operators towards increasingly distributed network architectures, service providers are investing in fiber to build and upgrade their existing networks,” said Sandy Motley, Head of Fixed Networks at Nokia.
All this demand has been fueled by the growth of the fiber to the home (FTTH) segment, which is still an untapped sector for operators in for example India and other countries. But with the rise of 5G and enterprise technology, the fiber broadband category may also get a new lease of life.
The telecommunications equipment manufactured by Nokia in the country also takes into account the requirements of the network operators who are building their 5G base stations across the country. “In India, there is a huge demand for fiber connections from both fixed network and mobile phone operators. OLT production at our Chennai facility will provide a timely boost to meet this demand in a timely manner,” said Sanjay Malik, Nokia’s President and Country Head, India.
Nokia said its planned PON OLT production in India will provide an impetus to expand the company’s production base and geographical coverage. Nokia has shown interest in the Indian government’s PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme, and this development strengthens the company’s bid to be part of the initiative.
