Apple Releases iOS 17.1: Here’s What You Need To Know About The Update
Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is scheduled to release the iOS 17.1 update to the public on October 24. The release date was revealed on the French regulatory group ANFR‘s website as part of Apple’s plan to address iPhone 12 radiation levels.
“Apple is committed to rolling out the update in France. This hotfix will be available to all users no later than October 24,” ANFR wrote on its website.
The iPhone maker recently confirmed that iOS 17.1 includes a small change that lowers the iPhone 12’s radiation levels. According to MacRumors, last month France ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 and “fix” the devices to bring them into compliance with European electromagnetic radiation standards.
The order came after the ANFR found that the iPhone 12 had a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of 5.74 watts per kilogram, which exceeds the limit set by the European Union. Apple said ANFR made a mistake in its radiation tests by using a testing protocol that did not take into account the iPhone’s off-body detection mechanism.
iPhones have a built-in feature that allows them to increase their transmission power when they are not kept in the body for optimized cellular network performance. According to the company, off-body detection has been thoroughly tested internationally and verified as an effective mechanism to meet SAR requirements.
The US smartphone manufacturer claimed that the iPhone 12 is safe to use and always has been. “After the iOS 17.1 update, iPhone 12 models in France no longer increase their transmit power when off-body mode is detected, so coverage in areas with low cellular signal may degrade cellular network performance in some usage situations,” MacRumors said. .
According to the report, the iOS 17.1 update will bring several other changes to the iOS 17 operating system, including an Apple Music favorites system, support for AirDrop on the Internet, and new options to see bank and card balances in the Wallet app.
