Amazon’s ‘Olympus’ AI Model: Ready to Take on ChatGPT!
US e-commerce giant Amazon is reportedly investing a significant amount of money in training for an ambitious large language model (LLM) codenamed Olympus. This AI model competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard AI.
According to a Reuters report, the Olympus AI model has two trillion parameters, which could make it one of the largest models to train.
OpenAI’s GPT-4 models, one of the best available, are reported to have a trillion parameters. Sources close to Reuters said the team will be led by former Alexa executive Rohit Prasad, who now reports directly to CEO Andy Jassy.
As Amazon’s chief scientist for general artificial intelligence (AI), Prasad brought together researchers working on Alexa’s AI and Amazon’s science team to work on training models.
“Amazon has already trained smaller models such as the Titan. It has also partnered with AI model startups such as Anthropic and AI21 Labs, offering them to Amazon Web Services (AWS) users,” the report said.
According to Reuters, Amazon is investing in large language models (LLM) to make its cloud computing platform, AWS, more attractive to enterprise customers. LLMs are the technology behind artificial intelligence tools that can produce human-like responses after being trained on massive amounts of data.
However, training larger AI models is more expensive due to the significant computing power required.
Amazon executives said in an earnings call last April that the company is increasing its investment in LLMs and creative artificial intelligence while reducing shipping and transportation costs for its retail operations, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s competitor OpenAI has announced that it will release custom versions of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, that people can create for a specific purpose. Called GPTs, these AI templates are a new way for anyone to create a customized version of ChatGPT to help them better in their daily lives, specific tasks, at work or at home, and then share what they’ve created with others.
