Micron’s Semiconductor Facility in Gujarat Expected to be Operational in One Year
US chip maker Micron’s ambitious project to set up a semiconductor unit in Gujarat is moving towards a landmark 12-month time frame for completion.
The Union government green-lighted the project in June and secured a huge capital investment of Rs 22,516 crore with 50 per cent government tax subsidy. The rapid progress was evident when the ground-breaking ceremony was held in Sanand, Gujarat, just three months after approval, demonstrating the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing India’s technological prowess.
The ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility currently under construction will be completed in just 12 months. It specializes in manufacturing memory and storage products that serve not only domestic needs but also global markets through export.
This major initiative is poised to create up to 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 additional jobs indirectly over the next five years, significantly improving employment prospects. A collaboration between the Indian Semiconductor Mission, the Gujarat government and a US company aims to train around 10,000 engineers and ensure that a skilled workforce meets the industry’s requirements.
In addition, the project has attracted strong interest from more than 30 spin-off industries specializing in gases, chemicals, equipment, substrate manufacturing and related fields, who are considering setting up their facilities in Gujarat, enriching the region’s technological landscape.
Wednesday marked a critical turning point with agreements between Micron, the India Semiconductor Mission and the Gujarat government to ensure timely project milestones and easing of incentives.
Gurusharan Singh, Senior Vice President, Micron, expressed his gratitude for the firm support of both the Central and State Governments and highlighted their pivotal role in advancing the project. Meanwhile, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lauded the coordinated efforts between the Gujarat government, the Center and the industry and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to nurturing India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized the global significance of the rapid development of the project, India’s position as a key player in the global semiconductor arena and the attraction of international attention.
According to industry insiders and experts, with construction progressing rapidly, all eyes are on the completion of Micron’s semiconductor plant in Gujarat, which is poised to redefine India’s technological landscape and make a significant impact on global semiconductor manufacturing.
