Coursera witnesses a surge in AI course signups every minute in 2023 due to the growing popularity of generative AI sparked by ChatGPT.

According to CEO Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera, the U.S. edutech platform, experienced an average of one new user per minute for its artificial intelligence courses in 2023. This indicates a growing interest in upskilling to take advantage of the potential growth in generative AI.

The technology behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken the world by storm, sparking a race among companies to release their own versions of the viral chatbot.

“I would say the real hotspot is generative AI because it affects so many people,” he told Reuters in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Coursera plans to offer AI courses with companies that are at the forefront of the AI race, including OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind, Maggioncalda said.

Investors had previously feared that applications based on generative artificial intelligence could replace ed-tech companies, but on the contrary, the technology has encouraged people to improve their skills, which benefits companies like Coursera.

The company has more than 800 artificial intelligence courses, and last year more than 7.4 million enrolled. Each student on the platform gets access to a ChatGPT-like AI assistant called “Coach” who provides personalized guidance.

The bot is built using large language models from OpenAI and Google’s Gemini, Maggioncalda said, adding that the company does not plan to build or train its own models.

“We will probably fine-tune our own data on top of these large language models.”

Coursera has also used the technology to translate about 4,000 courses into different languages and plans to increase hiring for AI roles this year.
