Major Camera Upgrade Expected for Better Performance in iPhone 16 Pro Max, According to Reports
With about 7 months until the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16 series, assuming that Apple sticks to the September release tradition, speculation regarding the next generation models is increasing. In the latest update, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to include a larger main camera sensor for better photo and video capture.
As spotted by MacRumors, this information comes from “Digital Chat Station”, a Weibo user who has been reporting various iPhone leaks over time. He suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro is an “image flagship,” meaning it’s camera-centric and focuses on camera performance.
He says the sensor coming with the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be 12% larger than the current iPhone 15 Pro models, as well as the 1/1.14-inch sensor in the iPhone 14 Pro from 2022. For reference, the iPhone 15 Pro/14 Pro sensor is 1/12.8 inches.
The user notes that the camera’s sensor is a custom 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 sensor that is stacked type, comes with a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter and Digital Gain Control for a cleaner image.
In theory, these factors could increase overall performance compared to older models, with better low-light performance, stronger bokeh, and more.
It remains to be seen whether this sensor will survive in the smaller iPhone 16 Pro or whether Apple will decide to keep it exclusively in the Max version. Apple is also rumored to bring a 5X tetraprism telephoto lens to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro, so this could be Apple’s way of distinguishing the Pro Max model from the rest of the crop. But still, these are just rumors for now and should be taken with a grain of salt until Apple makes an announcement on the same launch. The leaker has a good track record of accurately predicting iPhone features.
