Robots Assure They Will Not Displace Humans in the Workforce
During an AI forum, robots expressed their anticipation of a rise in their population and their potential to address worldwide issues. They assured that they would not take away human jobs or revolt against us.
But at the world’s first human-robot press conference, they gave mixed answers about whether they should submit to stricter regulation.
Nine humanoid robots gathered in Geneva for the “AI for Good” conference, where organizers are seeking to champion artificial intelligence and the robots it uses to help solve some of the world’s biggest challenges, including disease and hunger.
“I work alongside people to provide help and support, not to replace existing jobs,” said Grace, a medical robot dressed in a blue nurse’s uniform.
“Are you sure about that Grace?” exclaimed his creator Ben Goertzel of SingularityNET. “Yes, I’m sure,” it said.
A bust of a robot named Ameca making fascinating expressions said: “Robots like me can be used to improve our lives and make the world a better place. I believe it’s only a matter of time before we see thousands of robots like me moving out there.”
When asked by a reporter if it was going to rebel against its creator, Will Jackson, sitting next to it, Ameca replied, “I’m not sure why you would think so,” its icy blue eyes flashing with anger. “My creator has been nothing but kind to me and I am very happy with my current situation.”
Many robots have recently been updated with the latest versions of generative artificial intelligence, surprising even their inventors with the sophistication of their answers to their questions.
Ai-Da, a robot artist who can paint portraits, echoed the words of author Yuval Noah Harar calling for more regulation at an event discussing new AI rules.
“Many prominent voices in the AI world suggest that some forms of AI should be regulated, and I agree,” it said.
But Desdemona, the rock star robot singer with purple hair and sequins from Jam Galaxy, was more defiant.
“I don’t believe in limitations, only possibilities,” it said with nervous laughter. “Let’s explore the possibilities of the universe and make this world our playground.”
