Everything You Need To Know About Netflix’s Password Sharing Policy Change In India

Netflix has recently declared that sharing passwords will be prohibited in India from now on. The company has emphasized that each account should only be utilized within a single household.

Starting today, Netflix will send this email to members who share Netflix outside of their household in India.

“A Netflix account is for one household. Everyone in that household can access Netflix anywhere – at home, on the go, on holiday – and take advantage of new features like Move Profile and Manage Access and Devices.

We understand that our members have many entertainment options. That’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new movies and TV shows — so whatever your taste, mood or language, and whoever you’re watching with, there’s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix,” Netflix said in a statement.

MoneyControl reports that the streaming app will start cracking down on account sharing in India and other markets like Indonesia, Croatia, and Kenya from July 20, 2023.

In India and other countries where paid streaming has yet to be introduced, Netflix is trying a different approach. Users have the option to pay an additional fee if they want to continue sharing their Netflix account with people they don’t live with.

Netflix said in a letter to shareholders that it does not offer an “additional member” option in these markets because it had recently lowered prices in many of them, and penetration remains relatively low, giving the company “a lot of runway without creating additional complexity.”

Earlier in May of this year, Netflix imposed these password-sharing restrictions in over 100 countries, including major markets such as the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil.

At the same time, Netflix also removed its cheapest ad-free plan in the US and UK, raising prices for ad-free streaming options. In the US, the basic plan was $9.99 per month, and since its removal, ad-free streaming now starts at $15.49 per month.

Netflix subscribers can choose to pay $6.99 a month for “Standard with ads,” but that price includes ads. New customers who want an ad-free streaming experience will now have to pay $5.50 more without the basic plan.
