Indian Govt Imposes Limits on Imports of Laptops and Computers to Promote Domestic Production
In an effort to promote domestic manufacturing, India has implemented immediate restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers, as stated in a government notice on Thursday.
“Their import would be allowed against a valid restricted import licence,” the notification said.
In April-June, electronics imports, which include laptops, tablets and personal computers, were $19.7 billion, up 6.25% from a year earlier.
“The spirit of the movement is to push manufacturing to India. It’s not a push, it’s a push,” said Ali Akhtar Jafri, former executive director of electronics industry body the Manufacturers’ Association of Information Technology.
Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Apple Inc, Lenovo < 0992.HK > and HP Inc are the main companies selling laptops in the Indian market, and a significant number of them are imported from countries such as China.
