Over 23 Lakh Accounts Banned By Elon Musk’s X In India In Last Two Months
Elon Musk-led X Corp (formerly Twitter) has banned a record 23,95,495 accounts in India between ‘June and July’, mainly for promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity.
X banned 5,44,473 accounts in India between May 26 and June 25.
The microblogging platform also closed 1,772 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.
In its monthly report under the new IT rules 2021, X said it received 3,340 complaints from users in India during the same period through its complaint redressal mechanisms.
The report came about a week late because it did not appear on the portal on the first day of the month.
X Transparency usually publishes the report on the first day of the month, like other social media platforms like Meta and WhatsApp.
“This page doesn’t seem to exist. Here’s a picture of a poodle sitting on a chair for your trouble,” read the message when clicking on the IT Rules report for May-June 2023.
Additionally, between June 26 and July 25, X banned 1,851,022 accounts and also closed 2,865 accounts for promoting terrorism in their country.
The microblogging platform received 2,056 complaints from users in India during the same period through its complaint redressal mechanisms.
In addition, X handled 49 complaints complaining about account suspension between June 26 and July 25.
“We reversed one of these account freezes after reviewing the details of the situation. The rest of the reported accounts remain frozen,” the company said.
“We received 14 requests related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period,” it added.
Most complaints received from India were for abuse/harassment (1,783), followed by hate speech (54), invasion of privacy (48) and child sexual abuse (46).
Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users must publish monthly compliance reports.
