Twitter’s TweetDeck moves to a subscription-based model, requiring users to pay for access
Users worldwide are discovering a recent change on X (previously known as Twitter) as numerous individuals are encountering a paywall when attempting to access TweetDeck, the platform’s dashboard application for managing multiple accounts. This paywall appears as a pop-up window, prompting users to purchase X Premium subscriptions (formerly Twitter Blue) in order to continue utilizing the service. As TweetDeck is widely regarded as an invaluable tool for businesses to manage their posting schedules and interact with their followers, this new development will inevitably result in additional expenses for businesses.
While we didn’t face any issues using it, many users have reported that they are unable to use the service. One of them is Matt Navarra, a social media consultant who said: “X has finally killed free access to TweetDeck. It’s now officially a tool for Premium subscribers. X Premium’s sales page now pops up when trying to run Tweetdeck. bad news for social media managers, editors and for power users.”
TweetDeck starts showing a paywall to users
However, this move does not come as a surprise. On July 3, a tweet from X’s support page mentioned that TweetDeck would be officially named XPro and that it would be offered as part of the X Premium offering. The tweet also mentioned that the transition will begin in 30 days. The platform started adding a paywall after almost 45 days and given the speed of the transition, it will take some time before every unverified account is blocked from using it.
TweetDeck is an essential tool for many users who either manage large Twitter communities, own multiple accounts, or have businesses that let a team manage their social media. The tool allows users to have more control over content posting and timing and flow, checking other posts and more.
Last month, Musk announced in a tweet that TweetDeck would soon be gone. He said, “The name will be changed to XPro. A wide range of psy op plugins will be included.” The latter part was a joke, but with Musk anything is possible.
