Edge Chromium browser to launch on Xbox soon as Microsoft begins public testing
Microsoft has started testing the new Chromium-based Edge browser for Xbox consoles. The browser is currently available to Xbox testers in the Alpha Skip-Ahead group, TheVerge reports. The browser is accessible on the Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X.
According to the report, the new browser on Xbox will give users access to websites they want to surf on the controller. The Edge browser also supports Google’s Stadia cloud streaming platform. The browser is also likely to help users play more browser-based games. It is also likely to allow users to access web versions of apps such as Skype.
Since the browser is in the testing phase, users may experience some bugs.
According to a separate report, the UI on Edge for Xbox brings refined controller input. At the moment, there is no mouse and keyboard support. Users can also expect core Edge features to be available on the browser. For example, it supports extensions, collections, and other desktop features.
The latest update comes after Microsoft introduced vertical tabs on its Edge browser. As implied, the browser now allows users to move tabs to the left pane, instead of the conventional horizontal tabs at the top. Users also have the option to revert changes. The vertical tabs are said to be for modern 16: 9 monitors and laptops.
Besides the vertical tabs, the Edge browser also received some minor improvements. For example, when you open History, the browser will show you a toolbar drop-down list instead of covering the screen with a full page view. It is said to help users manage history while also accessing basic browser features like search and open. You can read more about the latest improvements to the Edge browser here.
