A foldable iPhone is reportedly being tested and could see the light of day in September 2022
According to supply chain reports, Foxconn, Apple’s long-time assembly partner, is testing a foldable iPhone for Apple and the device could start shipping in September 2022.
This potentially confirms a recent claim by Apple Insider about ordering Apple displays for a foldable iPhone from Samsung. A new report now says Foxconn is testing a foldable device.
According to reports, testing is focused on the use of OLED or micro LED advertising “the choice will affect how the production of an end device is done.”
According to United Daily News of China, Apple “asked Foxconn to test the display, as well as the bearings of a foldable iPhone.” The bearings are the actual bending element of the device and are said to be sourced from multiple vendors, however, final assembly must be handled by Foxconn.
Other reports have speculated that a foldable iPhone could be years away, but current reports from “unnamed supply chain sources” and United Daily News claim Apple could release the first foldable iPhone. by September 2022.
Folding tests for regular laptops require them to be opened and closed between 20,000 and 30,000 times, while for this foldable iPhone, Foxconn would perform over 100,000 open and close tests.
The latest report doesn’t give any details about the design of the foldable iPhone and sources say the development is constantly evolving.
According to tipster Jon Prosser, the foldable iPhone will be a dual-screen device, just like the Microsoft Surface Duo.
