AirTag Tracks Down Stolen Bike, Owner Calls It a Blessing and a Curse
The Apple AirTag has gained widespread recognition for its ability to assist individuals in locating their lost or stolen items. However, alongside these positive accounts, there have been distressing reports of individuals being targeted through the AirTag tracker. Nevertheless, we now share a peculiar tale that unfolded in Chicago. A man reported the theft of his motorcycle, yet he managed to trace its whereabouts using the My Find app, thanks to an AirTag cleverly concealed within the seat.
Motorcycle with AirTag
According to a report by 9To5Mac. A 36-year-old man told NBC Chicago that his motorcycle had been stolen. He told police he hid the Apple AirTag under his motorcycle seat in response to stories of carjackings and vehicle thefts in the city, and that he can now track it through the My Find app.
The man knew exactly where his bike was, but he was helpless because the Chicago police did nothing because the bike wasn’t outside! Even though the owner is fully aware of the exact location of the stolen bike, his only option was to make an insurance claim as if the bike’s whereabouts were unknown.
“Very frustrating that it has an AirTag,” he said. “It’s a bit of a gift and a curse, if you will. The gift knows where it is; the curse gets no help from CPD.”
The man said two incidents had been reported in his area and both owners were able to track down their vehicles, but police were unable to provide assistance.
“I was told that there is a possibility that they could get a search warrant if the GPS has an exact location,” he explained. “But I had a friend talk to a detective unless it’s a life-threatening situation, which they can’t even — if they have a location.”
In most cases, the vehicles are recovered with the help of AirTag, but this was one such sad case where the owners felt helpless due to the authorities’ lack of response to the crime. Police say their hands are tied in such cases.
