Apple’s Crash Detection Feature on iPhone Assists in Rescuing Couple After Car Accident

We’ve often seen Apple’s collision detection feature make headlines, and this time the feature was used to save a couple after their BMW got into an accident, according to a report from 9to5Mac.

For the uninitiated, Apple introduced the collision detection feature on the iPhone 14 series in September 2022, and since then the feature has reportedly helped save numerous crash and accident victims. It works with iPhone 14 series, iPhone 15 series (iOS 16 and later), Apple Watch 8 and later, Apple Watch SE 2 and Apple Watch Ultra and Watch Ultra 2.

According to the driver of the BMW E92, the driver of the BMW E90 suddenly drove in front of him and both collided. At that time, Apple’s crash detection function was introduced.

– I got into my first car accident as a passenger, and the doctors were surprised that we walked away with only a few fractures. Thanks to Apple’s SOS feature for calling 911 when I was in a state where I couldn’t and letting my emergency contacts know about the situation,” 9to5Mac quoted the victim as saying.

Additionally, the victim claimed that even though her parents (emergency contacts) had Android devices, the iPhone was able to send a location information text message and also to 911.

In related news, the collision detection feature, along with the emergency dispatch via satellite feature, helped authorities track down a man after he accidentally drove his car off a cliff and plunged nearly 400 feet into a canyon in Los Angeles — earlier this year. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department received a message from the iPhone communications center around 10:30 p.m. alerting them to Mt. of an accident on Wilson Road in Los Angeles.
