Apple may bring health-related features to new AirPods soon: Report
After bringing several life-saving features to its smartwatches, US tech giant Apple is planning to soon bring new AirPods with health monitoring features. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s AirPods may get more prominent hearing health features in the next year or two.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Gurman said that Apple will update AirPods as a healthcare tool within the next year or two, which will add “the ability to get some sort of hearing information. The company has already added several hearing-focused features to last year’s AirPods, such as Live Listen and Conversation Boost.”
However, Gurman noted that such features have not yet been approved by the FDA or designed to act as a replacement for hearing aids. Given Apple’s health goals, he expects AirPods to adopt such functions more formally in the near future, MacRumors reports.
The report also mentioned that Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously emphasized the company’s intention to add biometric health monitoring features to future AirPods models.
Apple’s patent filings describe an in-ear fitness monitoring system that integrates an advanced biometric sensor that detects physiological metrics like temperature, heart rate, sweat level, and more through skin contact and built-in motion sensors.
Apple CTO Kevin Lynch has also hinted that AirPods could be a source of additional health data in the future, according to the report.
Meanwhile, another Gurman report says the first touchscreen Mac could hit the market as early as 2025. The first touchscreen Mac is also expected to continue to be a traditional laptop design with a trackpad and keyboard.
According to Gurman, Apple engineers are actively involved in the development of a touchscreen Mac, and one of the first touchscreen Macs could be an OLED version of the MacBook Pro.
