Apple May Be Developing Smart Ring Technology Like Samsung
Samsung appears to be the latest tech giant to eye the fascinating smart ring market, but it’s hardly the only one. Reports suggest that Apple is looking to enter this segment as well, with the patent filing sharing information about a rumored product that may hit the market in the future. But unlike most smart ring-focused tech brands, Apple may be opting for a simple approach.
The filing claims that Apple wants a smart fitness ring to provide haptic feedback about notifications that are likely to pop up on an iPhone. The application was filed in September 2021 and Apple was granted a patent in August 2022, which seems to indicate that the company has a concrete plan to develop and launch the product.
Some of the smart tires launched in recent months seem to offer a bunch of features, but Apple plans to use the iPhone as the primary device and receive notifications from the smart tires project via messages, fitness alerts or even email.
Smart rings could be the next frontier in the wearable fitness segment and probably the most practical device that can sit on the finger and not invade space or glare at the screen. Another fascinating fact about the form factor is that companies can adjust the size and make it easy to use on the ear or nose.
Apple has a tendency to apply for patents for various products, which may be part of its product strategy or just for owning the rights to a certain technology. Apple’s patent also hints that the ring could also be used to control laptops, headphones and computers.
Either way, we’re looking forward to seeing how the smart ring segment develops, as Samsung is expected to be the first major brand to launch its Galaxy Ring in the near future. But Apple joining the fray would certainly get the industry talking and perhaps more products in the pipeline.
