Apple Unveils New Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 Models
Apple’s Wonderlust event, where it will unveil the new iPhone 15 series, as well as the next-generation Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, is just a few hours away. While we have a good idea of what to expect from the iPhone 15 series, the upcoming watches have largely flown under the radar.
Here’s what to expect from Apple’s new watches – Series 9 and Ultra 2 – and what significant changes they could bring when they launch later today
Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 to get a new U2 chip and a better heart rate monitor
According to a recent Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, the new Apple Watches – Series 9 and Ultra – will look quite similar to the current models. But Gurman says they could have a new processor and “various sensors and internal component upgrades,” which could include a more accurate heart rate sensor. The new watches are also expected to get the new U2 chip, which is an upgraded version of the ultra-wideband chip found in the current models.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 gets a new all-black finish
The Apple Watch Ultra is undoubtedly one of the best-built watches Apple has ever produced. Its titanium case and durable glass construction make it ideal for adventure-oriented activities such as hiking and deep-sea diving. However, the first generation watch was only available in one color: gray, the natural color of titanium. Based on recent reports, Apple might offer its customers a new all-black Apple Watch Ultra 2 this time.
No MicroLED Apple Watch this year
There have been rumors that Apple is working on a revamped Apple Watch, which will be a major overhaul – in the same way that the iPhone X was to the iPhone. The watch was rumored to be released in 2024, but now it looks like it may be delayed to the second half of this decade. Analyst Ross Young said the microLED Apple Watch Ultra was slated to launch in the second half of 2025, but TrendForce believes it’s unlikely to launch until the first quarter of 2026.
