Apple Watch With 18-Karat Gold Design Now Discontinued
Apple’s first generation of Apple Watches, also known as “Series Zero”, has been added to the company’s list of obsolete products. That means repairs for the watches, including the $17,000 gold Apple Watch, will no longer be supported, as reported by MacRumors.
According to the report, the list includes the solid gold first generation Apple Watch, which previously cost as much as $17,000 (roughly Rs. 14 lakh). The watch was made of 18 carat gold and was discontinued in 2016 after its initial release in 2014. Additionally, software support for these watches also ended in 2018, with WatchOS 5 being the last supported version.
According to the report, other versions of the Apple Watch Series Zero, including the 38mm and 42mm aluminum and stainless steel versions, as well as the Hermès versions, are also now classified as obsolete.
What is “outdated”?
When a product has passed its life cycle, it is classified into two categories: Obsolete or Vintage. Products become “obsolete” when “Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago” and thus “Apple will stop all hardware services for obsolete products” and service providers cannot order parts for repair.
Now, considering it’s been over 7 years since the original watches were announced, it makes sense that Apple would eventually stop selling them.
However, you can try to repair these obsolete products at third-party outlets and service centers, but the ability to perform repairs depends only on the availability of parts and trained manpower.
