Apple Working on Touchscreen Macs: What to Expect in 2025
Cupertino-based technology giant Apple is aggressively working on touchscreen Mac technology. Now, a new report says that the first touchscreen Mac could hit the market as early as 2025. The first touchscreen Mac is also still expected to be a traditional laptop with a trackpad and keyboard.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple engineers are actively involved in the development of a touchscreen Mac, and one of the first touchscreen Macs could be an OLED version of the MacBook Pro. While the standard laptop design will continue to be used, the machine will have a screen that supports touch input like an iPhone or iPad, MacRumors reports.
Gurman also said that the first touch-screen Macs will likely use macOS, the operating system that runs on Macs. The iPhone manufacturer currently has no plans to combine iPadOS and macOS.
According to a report in 2020, Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi, said that Apple believed that the ergonomics of the Mac required the hands to rest on the surface, and claimed that raising the hand to push the screen was tiring.
Later in 2020, Federighi said that a touch-based user interface was not considered for the Mac and that Apple had no secret plans to change the way the Mac worked. According to the report, Apple has dismissed claims of a touchscreen Mac for nearly a decade.
In related news, Apple will reportedly not bring the under-display Face ID feature to the iPhone until 2025 or later. According to display analyst Ross Young, the iPhone 15 Pro will not have Face ID below the display due to technical issues, reports AppleInsider.
This feature will likely come to the iPhone 17 Pro at the earliest. There have been rumors that the tech giant could hide biometric technology under the screen ever since the iPhone X debuted its Face ID system.
