April’s Full Moon is Known as the Pink Moon

In the coming days of April, skywatchers can look forward to the arrival of the “Pink” moon. Contrary to its name, the moon will not actually appear pink; instead, the name is derived from a lovely North American flower that typically blooms during this time of year.

When is the full moon in April expected?

According to Space magazine, April’s full moon will grace our skies on April 23. It reaches its peak illumination around 19:49. ET/6:49 p.m. CT. Although it may not sparkle as brightly after the April 8 eclipse, it promises to paint a charming evening sky.

Why the name ‘Pink’ Moon?

The name “Pink” moon may conjure up images of a brightly colored celestial body, but it’s not about the color of the moon. Instead, the moniker is rooted in the country phlox, a pink flower abundant throughout North America. The moon appears golden near the horizon and turns radiant white above.

Optimal viewing spots

For the best viewing experience, it is recommended to avoid city lights. An open area with no light pollution is the best vantage point to see the moon rise above the horizon.

The full moon naming tradition

Each full moon has its own name, often inspired by nature and cultural traditions. In North America, these names are borrowed from Native American folklore. The Maine Farmers’ Almanac began publishing these names in the 1930s. Full moons coming in 2024 include the Flower Moon in May, the Strawberry Moon in June and the Buck Moon in July.

The pink moon and the Lyrids meteor shower

Coinciding with the Lyrids meteor shower, which peaked late on April 21 through April 22, the Pink Moon can be a challenge for meteor viewing. Despite this, the shower will continue until April 29, offering a chance to see a celestial spectacle, including possible fireballs, albeit due to the influence of the moon.

When April’s pink moon graces the sky, it serves as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of our universe, inviting us to look up and appreciate the natural wonders above us.
