Charles Martinet Retires as Voice of Mario; Will Not Join Super Mario Bros Wonder Tour
Charles Martinet, the voice actor behind Nintendo’s Mario, will no longer play the character going forward. Notably, Martinet voiced the Mario games since 1994, and his voice has now become synonymous with the character.
Super Mario Bros is a name heard in most homes thanks to its family-friendly appeal and the critical acclaim Nintendo’s beloved franchise has achieved over the years. One of the reasons why Mario has brought so much success to Nintendo is Mario himself – an Italian plumber.
People have come to love his unique demeanor and Charles Martinet’s voice acting. The iconic “It’s me, Mario!” is something that most people, whether young or old, recognize.
In fact, in the upcoming game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the Nintendo Switch, Martinet does not voice Mario or Luigi. This is a departure from the run that began with Mario Teaches Typing in 1994 – almost three decades ago.

Nintendo has not said why Martinet is leaving, but the Japanese gaming giant has confirmed that he will be a “Mario ambassador” going forward – responsible for promoting Mario around the world.
“It’s been a privilege to work with Charles in bringing Mario to life for so many years, and we want to thank and celebrate him,” Nintendo said.
In addition, during his long career, Martinet has voiced Mario, but he has also worked behind Mario’s brother Luigi, Wario and Waluigi.
