Curious about the Humane Ai Pin? Discover when you can expect the world’s first AI-powered wearable computer.
Humane, a startup established in 2018 and recognized for its utilization of AI technology, has introduced its inaugural product, Ai Pin, a wearable gadget integrated into clothing. The company, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, promotes this device as a novel technology that eliminates the need for users to spend time engaging with it, allowing them to swiftly obtain necessary information and concentrate on the present moment. Diverging from the conventional approach of most consumer tech products, Ai Pin features a displayless design and instead relies on voice and laser ink technology to communicate information through an AI chatbot. Humane has recently announced that the product will commence shipping to consumers in March 2024.
Humane announced via its official X account: “We are excited to announce that Ai Pin will begin shipping in March 2024. All of us here at Humane can’t wait for you to experience Ai Pin, the world’s first wearable computer powered by Ai. We are extremely grateful for the enthusiasm and support, especially from our first supporters.
The company also revealed that it will ship the products to those who placed priority orders. The order of delivery is determined based on the time of purchase. First-come, first-served units go on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you’re still interested in ordering, the Ai Pin and Battery Booster costs $699. Additionally, there is a $24 monthly fee for a Humane subscription that gives you a cell phone connection, number and coverage. For now, this service is only offered by T-Mobile in the US.
What is Ai Pin?
Ai Pin is powered by an unnamed Snapdragon chipset and an AI engine that is likely to be GPT-4, although the company is not naming it. It does, however, mention OpenAI and Microsoft in a press release, saying, “Humane’s unique collaboration with Microsoft and OpenAI gives Ai Pin access to some of the world’s most powerful AI models and platforms and lays the foundation for additional features as the technology evolves.” The connection to OpenAI is obvious, as Sam Altman is the largest shareholder with a 14 percent stake.
How does Ai Pin work?
With an array of sensors, a camera, a speaker, a microphone, and a laser ink display, the Ai Pin can act as an abstract smartphone with limited use. In addition, the device is also focused on privacy. Although the camera is pointed at the world, the company claims it won’t listen unless it’s active, and in fact won’t even listen for wake-up calls.
The features mentioned by the company are as follows. It can draft and send messages and emails without you having to type. You can simply speak to the device and it will suggest a sketch with a prompt on the laser ink screen. You can simply hold your palm up and see the screen there. If you are not satisfied, you can add prompts to change them.
AI can also recommend music playlists for you. Although it wasn’t mentioned, we assume this means headphones can be paired with the device. You can control the music with gesture control. In addition to this, you can use Ai Pin to ask questions in the same way as an internet-connected chatbot. But this, because it’s connected to your email and messages, can also contextualize the information coming from it and give you specific information about your life. For example, you can ask about a restaurant your friend told you to try and when it was.
In addition to this, it can also understand and learn from your behavior to prioritize tasks and calls and push away things you don’t usually do, such as calls from sales marketing.
The device comes with an internal battery, but the company also offers a battery booster that can be attached to the back of the device for longer use.
