Elon Musk Explains Rationale Behind Rebranding to X
Twitter has successfully rebranded itself as X in an unprecedented manner, accomplishing the task in just three days, with only minor issues in removing the logo. The owner of the company, Elon Musk, announced on Saturday via a tweet that he would be changing the microblogging platform’s logo from Larry the Bird to the letter X. On Sunday, he unveiled the new logo and shared that the domain x.com would now redirect to Twitter. Finally, on Monday, he implemented the new logo, completing the digital transformation. Despite speculation about the motive behind this rebranding, the company had not previously disclosed the need for such a change, especially considering the iconic status of the Twitter brand. However, Musk recently provided an explanation for the decision.
Musk said in a tweet: “X Corp bought Twitter both for free speech and as an accelerator for X, everything. This is not just a company rebranding itself, it’s doing the same thing.” He was referring to an event in April when the billionaire registered Twitter as X Corp.
Highlighting the changing direction of the platform, he explained: “The name Twitter made sense when it only involved 140-character messages back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can send almost anything, including several hours of video”.
“In the coming months, we will add comprehensive communication and the ability to manage your entire financial world. The Twitter name doesn’t make sense in this context, so we have to say goodbye to the bird,” he added.
X, the new Everything app
X CEO Linda Yaccarino also told how the company is going with the new brand identity. He tweeted: “X is the future space of limitless interactivity – focusing on voice, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’ve only begun to imagine.”
He also said that the company has taken great strides in recent months to implement the new vision. “For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, innovate faster, and realize our great potential. X does that and more. We’ve already started to see X take shape over the past 8 months with rapid feature releases, but we’re just getting started. There is no limit to this transformation. X is a platform that can deliver, well….everything. @elonmusk and I look forward to working with our teams and each of our partners to bring X to the world,” he added.
